Smiths Tarred and feathers, 4-3. |
| Week 1
It was Brendon Bruner vs Ken Tarr, with BB getting the better of things in a 4-3 comeback win for the Milk Men. This season started out like many others, with Benassi allowing a goal on the first shot he saw, and with Paul Maffa hacking down a league elder, in this case it was Al Peterson. It was just one of three Blacksmith penalties in the first period, the other two going to John Kitchura. But despite all the help from the referees, the Milk Men powerplay was useless, going 0 for 3.
After an early Jimmy D. goal in the 2nd which tied the game, Tarr seemed to come unraveled. He started to make more saves than usual. This allowed the underachieving Blacksmiths to get the lead back, as the Emperor George Anderson would assist on a Bob Powell goal. Anderson would assist on another in the third when his shot went in off of Coughlin's skate, rounding out a 3 point day which included a goal on the first attempt of the morning, as he celebrated his (insert number here) birthday. Too bad the rest of the Blacksmiths didn't have that same fire. (Sorry, had to use that one.) Two goals by Bruner in the 3rd, both on breakaways, and a seeing eye backhander from Al Peterson around the blue line would do in the navy team 4-3. "Al's shot almost hit my glove and changed direction," said Jack Gavin after the game. "Well, I saw some things I liked today," said Rick Armand of the Milk Men. "If we get Bruner six breakaways, he'll score on two of them."
